The Credibility of God’s Word
The Bible is unique in its origin and contents. Its doctrines are unequivocal and incomparable. The very first article of our Declaration of Faith affirms that “we believe in the verbal inspiration of the Bible.” “Inspiration” means that the written words in the original manuscripts of the Bible were chosen by God and expressed through the various writers. The Bible is a holy book written by holy men of God. God Himself is the originator and author, men were the instruments that God used to pen the pages. “Inspiration” also involved the accurate recording of that which was revealed. The account of creation, for example, could only have been known by direct revelation. So, the Holy Spirit guided the writers in the selectivity and accuracy of their writings.Peter affirmed, “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21). The apostle Paul wrote, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto good works.” (2Timothy 3:16).The word “Scripture” comes from a Latin root “scriptum” which literally means “something written”. The term “inspiration of God” here comes from a Greek word, which means “God-breathed” or “breathed out from God”. Therefore, the Bible is the authentic, infallible Word of God. It is undoubtedly the greatest book ever written – translated in over one thousand languages – far more than any other book and has been the world’s best seller for many centuries. It is an ancient collection of sacred writings, yet it is up-to-date as today’s newspapers and relevant to the universal needs of mankind.Despite its ancient origin, the Bible is contemporary to every age and generation. Its indisputable, transcendent record is a revelation of God, unfolding the truth of God by God Himself, to enable humanity to enter into a meaningful and wonderful relationship with Him through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. It speaks of the catastrophic fall of man, the way of salvation and God’s covenant relationships with mankind – certainly the most trustworthy |
