The laws of many countries are based on the Bible; great music - like Handel’s Messiah was based on the Bible and so were the writings of many of the most magnificent authors. John Bunyan’s book, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” - written while he was in prison in Bedford jail, was the most read book in England next to the Bible, and its tremendous, captivating story was almost completely based on the Bible.
The Bible deals with the past, present and future and it addresses the very core of human existence. It touches the parts that other books cannot touch. Resident in every promise in the book is the ability to bring it to pass. Just one word from its sacred pages can transform the life of a drug addict, or an alcoholic, or make a whole barbarous community civilized. The Bible provides the answers to life’s most difficult problems, healing for physical and emotional ailments and gives comfort to those who are in sorrow, but most importantly, it shows us the way to God and His eternal salvation.D. L. Moody, one of the greatest revivalists of his time said, “I know the Bible is inspired because it inspired me. Sin will keep you from this book. This book will keep you from sin.”John Quincy Adams, fourth president of the USA, is reported to have said, “The Bible is the book of all others, to be read at all ages, and in all conditions of life … It is an invaluable and inexhaustible mine of knowledge and virtue.”Cardinal John Henry Newman said, “I read the Bible to know what people ought to do, and my newspaper to know what they are doing.”William Mackergo Taylor said, “The man of one book is always formidable; but when that book is the Bible he is irresistible.”C. H. Spurgeon, a great Bible expositor said, “Nobody ever outgrows the Scripture, the book widens and deepens with the years.”Sir Isaac Newton, one of the world’s greatest scientists said,“We account the Scriptures of God to be the most sublime philosophy. I find more sure marks of authenticity than in any profane history whatever.”John Wycliffe, an outstanding Oxford theologian of the 14th century, who first made the whole Bible available in English said, “The Bible is God’s Law not the law of the church, or the commands of the Pope, or even the order of the king himself – but God’s Law. Men should listen to what God tells them in His book.” |
